Not about MY beardie [Mar. 7th, 2011|07:40 pm]
Everything Bearded Dragons

I went to Petsmart this evening, to buy some crickets for my bearded dragon, Sonja.

Obligatory picture video:

I like to look in all the animal cages as long as I'm there, especially at the rodents and at the bearded dragons. I've been concerned about their baby beardies, though -- they seem to be selling them smaller and smaller. In fact, tonight I'm pretty certain the baby beardie they had in the tank was at most five inches! I don't know, that seems really small to me. I'm not sure what to do.

I love how she looked at you like "I see them. you gonna feed me now?" My doofus always looks at me like that across the room when he's hungry, its still amusing after 5 years.

Lol, this video is cute. My beardies do that too! I agree with you on the Petsmart/Petco thing. They sell the babies way way too young, your not supposed to sell them until they are 8 weeks I thought. It doesn't seem like they get fed enough at all. I have learned from being on a yahoo bearded dragon group that those beardies usually have parasites in them :( I just had to spend $245 on a vet visit because one of my dragons had coccidia and since I bought both of mine from there I have to now give them both the same medicine! I would rely more on a smaller pet store that really knows about their animals and takes good care of them.

I worked at PetSmart full time in their pet care department for three years... so perhaps my reply is biased :)

The size the animals come in really isn't the choice of PetSmart's, it is the choice of whatever animal breeder they are getting the animals from. We can order two sizes, larger and smaller, and even then those vary wildly-- sometimes the big ones are very small and vice versa. Wasn't the store's fault though! Believe me, a lot of times we wished they would send us larger ones! :(

We did feed them very well though, a variety of different feeder insects as well as different vegetables, alternating what types of veggies and bugs they would get depending on the day. We also prided ourselves on knowing our animals very well :) But, this DEFINITELY varies from store to store... my PetSmart was great and I loved working there, but I am sure there are some that are not so great.
